Educating property owners about the types of materials that can be recycled is challenging, but the satisfaction of providing an alternative to landfilling is priceless. Effective recycling means thinking out of the box to create solutions for materials that are commonly discarded in the waste stream.
Providing a venue for metro-Philadelphia residents to responsibly recycle those items that cannot be accepted at the landfill is a valuable service beneficial to all. Recycling must consider all aspects of how operations affect the local environment and the workers that must handle a wide variety of material.

When approached by a client about developing a solution for the recycling of burlap bags, the challenge was irresistible. Knowing that these potentially useful bags were being landfilled set in motion the development of Burlap City which specializes in the development of new markets for used burlap bags.

An analysis of potential markets and uses was completed and it was discovered that many potential markets existed for burlap. Although a majority of the markets were commercial, local demand was also found to be strong, although without the volume identified in the business sector.

Since the launch of Burlap City in 2010, over 2 million pounds of burlap destined for the landfill have been put to good use in a number of industrial, agricultural and commercial venues.
